Dr. Shawnté M. Elbert
Shawnté Elbert, MA, MCHES, TTS, CHWC, Ed.D.
Shawnté was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC and currently resides Ellensburg,
WA. Currently, she is the inaugural Associate Dean of Health and Wellness at Central
Washington University. Her portfolio includes supervision of Disability Services,
Counseling Services, Student Health, University Recreation and the Wellness Center.
She is a graduate from East Carolina University with BS in Health Education and
Promotion with a concentration in Worksite Health. At ECU she was an active Peer
Educator in Healthy P.I.R.A.T.E.S. which was the beginning for her love of college
health! She received her Master of Arts degree in Wellness from Chatham University
and completed her Ed.D. from St. Thomas University in Educational Leadership and
Management in August 2019. Shawnté received her Master Certified Health Education
Specialist (MCHES®) in April 2016, her CHES® certification in 2007, and a Tobacco
Treatment Specialist (TTS) certification in 2012, and is a certified Health & Wellness
Coach. At East Carolina University-Student Health Services she held the Health
Educator position for over five and a half years. At East Carolina she served as an Intern
supervisor, provided prevention and awareness events, programs, small group and 1-on-
1 consultations to students on various health and wellness topics, and taught a
Freshman Seminar Course. While at East Carolina, she also served as the Assistant
Director of Greek Life for 10 months for the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and
the Multicultural Greek Council.
After East Carolina, she was employed at UNC Charlotte – Center for Wellness
Promotion, where she was the Health Educator for Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs and General
Health. Shawnté also ran a successful Tobacco Cessation clinic for students while
serving as a site supervisor for graduate and undergraduate Interns, co-advised the
Wellness Ambassadors and G.A.M.M.A. Peer Education groups. Shawnté also served as
an Adjunct Instructor teaching a Peer Health 2 course, along with health and wellness
courses for Central Piedmont Community College, Kaplan University and University of
Phoenix. Shawnté has over five years’ experience with traditional and online teaching.
After Charlotte, she worked at IUPUI as the Director of Health and Wellness Promotion.
In addition, Shawnté had a faculty appointment with the IU Richard M. Fairbanks
School of Public Health in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the
School of Liberal Arts.
Additionally, she has more than 13 years of health education and promotion experience.
Over the years, Shawnté has worked as a Health Educator for traditional and non-
traditional students and university employees. She has developed programs, events and
health/wellness coaching for a diverse group of students and employees successfully
utilizing best practices and evidence informed initiatives to ensure a comprehensive and
holistic approach to wellbeing. She also provided HR trainings for IU/IUPUI employees.
Dr. Elbert has received personal honors from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., ECU
